Evidence for inner core super-rotation from time-dependent differential PKP traveltimes observed at Beijing Seismic Network

چکیده
S U M M A R Y In an effort to confirm and constrain inner core rotation, we examine earthquakes from the South Sandwich Islands recorded at the Beijing Seismic Network. We obtained a total of 109 high-quality measurements of PKP(BC)-PKP(DF) differential traveltimes by waveform cross-correlations from earthquakes spanning over 30 years. The results show robust temporal changes in PKP(BC)-PKP(DF) residuals along this pathway, providing new support for the differential inner core hypothesis. We also observed evidence for a lateral velocity gradient in this part of the inner core. Assuming that the temporal changes result from a shift of a lateral structure due to an inner core rotation, we estimate the inner core rotation rate to be about 0.41 ± 0.12◦ yr−1 faster than the mantle.

Examination of systematic mislocation of South Sandwich Islands earthquakes using station pairs: Implications for inner core rotation
[1] One of the most robust observations for the inner core rotation is that the differential PKP BC-DF traveltimes from South Sandwich Islands (SSI) earthquakes to College, Alaska (and some other stations in Alaska), have increased systematically over the past 50 years. The time shift in the differential time residuals is some 0.3 s over 30 years. This temporal change is thought to result from ...
متن کاملCore structure re-examined using new teleseismic data recorded in Antarctica: evidence for, at most, weak cylindrical seismic anisotropy in the inner core
S U M M A R Y We present a significant addition to the data set of traveltimes of seismic PKP waves that sample the Earth’s lowermost mantle and core along the Earth’s rotation axis. Recorded at permanent Global Seismic Network (GSN) and temporary SSCUA deployment broadband seismographic stations in Antarctica, the new data improve the previously poor and biased coverage that underlies the seis...

S U M M A R Y We have assembled a data set of PKKPdf −PKKPbc (PKKPdf −bc) and PKPPKPdf -PKKPbc differential traveltimes. This data set is used to study the Earth’s uppermost inner core in the western hemisphere. Data from the eastern Pacific are recorded at the Canadian Yellowknife array and travel through the inner core twice, once perpendicular to the Earth’s rotation axis and once parallel t...
متن کاملLarge variations in travel times of mantle‐sensitive seismic waves from the South Sandwich Islands: Is the Earth’s inner core a conglomerate of anisotropic domains?
[1] Cylindrical anisotropy in Earth’s inner core has been invoked to account for travel times of PKP core‐sensitive seismic waves, such as from the South Sandwich Islands (SSI) earthquakes observed in Alaska, which depart from predictions. Newly collected travel‐time residuals from seismic waves from the SSI region that sample only Earth’s mantle (PcP and P waves) have a comparable range to the...
متن کاملTime dependence of PKP(BC)–PKP(DF) times: could this be an artifact of systematic earthquake mislocations?
Differential inner core rotation was first detected from time-dependent observations of differential travel times between PKP(DF) waves (which go through the inner core) and PKP(BC) waves (which turn at the bottom of the outer core) (Song and Richards, 1996). Criticisms concerning the reported detection have been raised, the most significant one being the possible bias from potential systematic...
